4 WINTERS: Jewish Partisans in World War II, with Julia Mintz

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: Aside from giving their testimonies, how did the partisans help in the making of this film?

Many people have the idea that during the Holocaust Jews went passively to the slaughter like sheep.  Nothing can be further from the truth.  There were over 100 uprisings, some of which were more massive and organized, while others were small and spontaneous. The most well-known of them was the one that took place in the Warsaw Ghetto between April 19 and May 16, 1943.

Even less well-known are the actions of the thousands of Jewish partisans who waged guerrilla warfare against the Nazis in the forests of Eastern Europe. 4 Winters is a documentary that tells the stories of some of those partisans in their own words, with supporting film footage that was taken during the war.  The film was made by Julia Mintz, a writer, producer and director whose work focuses on narratives of bravery and resistance against unimaginable odds. She has been on the producing team for films that have been shortlisted for the Academy Awards, have premiered at Cannes, Sundance and TriBeCa, and won Emmy, Peabody and festival awards.
