ACRe:  A (New??) Jewish Farm in New Jersey

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What are some activities that ACRe organizes, and who participates in them?

Alliance Community Reboot (ACRe), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, seeks to preserve and rebuild Jewish farm-based community in South New Jersey, on the site of the historic Alliance Colony, the first Jewish agricultural society in North America, which was established by Russian Jewish immigrants in 1882.

William and Malya Levin first conceived of Alliance Community Reboot in 2014. As a great-great grandson of Moses Bayuk, leader of the original Alliance Colony, William had never truly connected with his Jewish agricultural roots or the historical farmland his family still owned. Inspired by their first visit to the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center for Sukkahfest, William and Malya realized they had the potential to contribute to the Jewish farming movement, which has experienced a resurgence among the younger generation of American Jews.

ACRe utilizes 70 acres of family farmland, including the modern farmhouse, historic Moses Bayuk House and Alliance Synagogue. In 2022 ACRe was first awarded a Salem County History Grant to build the Alliance Historic Model Farm.
