ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What “structured discriminations” were instituted in the 1920s, and when were they finally made illegal?
Pamela Nadell is an American historian, researcher, and author focusing on American Jewish history, especially the history of American Jewish women, and also on antisemitism. She received her B.A. in Hebraic studies from Douglass College of Rutgers University, and her master’s degree in Jewish history and doctorate in American Jewish history from Ohio State University.
Dr. Nadell served as president of the Association for Jewish Studies from 2015 to 2017 and currently holds the Patrick Clendenen Chair in Women’s and Gender history at American University.
On December 5, 2023 she testified in front of the House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce, along with the presidents of MIT and Harvard, at a hearing about antisemitism on university campuses.
Her new book Antisemitism, an American Tradition won the National Jewish Book Award in American Jewish Studies. It tells the powerful story of antisemitism in America and how it has shaped the lives of Jews from colonial times to today, and also shows how Jews have responded to this prejudice and hate.
This week Dr. Nadell is speaking with us about that history, and her new book.
