ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What are the names of the two instruments (shown above) which are fundamental features of Iraqi music?
Regine Basha was born into an Iraqi Jewish family in the Iraqi diaspora. She is a graduate of NYU, Concordia University and Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York. After graduating from Bard in 1996, she remained mostly New York-based until 2021 while also working on independent projects in other cities such as Austin, Istanbul, Mexico City, Berlin and Tangier, among others. She also held the post of Cultural Affairs Officer for the Canadian Consulate in New York.
Regine is an artist, curator, story-teller and founder of the project Tuning Baghdad, which is an audio-visual archive of music and stories recalling her Iraqi-Jewish upbringing. She also has a special interest in Iraqi Jewish food and has hosted a show called Kitchen Radio.
In our last program Regine gave us an introduction to Iraqi Jewish history and culture. This week she is speaking with us about her cultural projects.
