ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What organization are the proceeds of the album going to, and what do they do?
Lider mit Palestine: New Yiddish Songs of Grief, Fury, and Love is a collection of 17 original songs steeped in history and heritage and committed to a liberatory future. The artists received their inspiration from multiple sources including Jewish history, poetry and religious texts, among others. The accompanying booklet is in Yiddish, with transliteration and English translation as well as information about the artists and about each song, written by the artists themselves.
The album was produced by Joe Dobkin, Josh Waletzky and Isabel Frey and is available on Bandcamp. This week we are speaking with Joe and Josh about the project.
At the end of the program you will be able to hear one of the songs on the album. A dor vos hot farloyrn di moyre A Generation That Lost Its Fear, was written by Linda Gritz with input from Josh Waletzky. The title comes from her grandfather-in-law, Moshe Katz, who wrote a memoir with that name describing his life in Tsarist Russia.
