ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What unique characteristics of Silvina’s hometown have had an important influence on her artwork?
Silvina Mizrahi is an interdisciplinary artist and art educator. She was born in Tucumán, Argentina, spent some time in Israel, and has been living in Boston since 2001. She received her Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Tucuman, in 1991 and then moved to Buenos Aires, where she trained in sculpture and also dance and theatre.
Her works encompass figurative bronze sculptures, abstract expressionist mixed media paintings, public art and sculptures using recycled materials. Her art is a mirror of her experiences as Latino immigrant, memories from her childhood, Jewish traditions and her commitment to environmental causes.
She has received several awards including the Israel National Fellowship for New Immigrants, the Nathaniel Bushward Award from the Copley Society and the Juror Choice from the Thomas Menino Art Center in Boston, and in 2017 she was selected “One of the 100 most influential people for the Latino Community in Boston” by the newspaper El Planeta.
Silvina has exhibited her work in numerous galleries and museums both in the United States and internationally, including in Israel, Argentina, Uruguay and France. She currently has a solo exhibit, Ecos de un espíritu sefardí (“Echos of a Sephardi Spirit”), at Centro Sefarad-Israel in Madrid, which opened in June and will be on until September 30. I highly recommend it, so if you are in Madrid this week try to get to see it.
