The V Humus Film Fest, with Sara “Neighborhood Planter” Casado
ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What is “running and huerting”?
La Casa Encendida is a social and cultural center located in the Lavapiés area of Madrid. It is a dynamic space open to audiences of all ages and persuasions where visitors can find some of today’s most groundbreaking artistic expressions as well as educational, philosophical and debating activities that revolve around the center’s four main spheres of action: Arts, Solidarity, Environment and Education.
Urban gardens have become one of the most creative and innovative inner-city experiences, and for the past five years La Casa Encendida has hosted the Humus Film Fest, an annual festival of short films dedicated to theme of “urban gardens and city”. The film festival was the brainchild of Alberto Peralta, who created the event in 2016 and has organized it every year since then.

This week we are speaking with Sara Casado. Known as “jardinera vecinal” (or “neighborhood planter”), she is a long-time resident of the neighborhood who is active in the local “Esta es una Plaza” urban garden, as well as in the organization of the Humus Film Fest.
