“The World Entire:  A True Story of an Extraordinary World War II Rescue”, with Elizabeth Brown

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: Who is the book dedicated to, and why?

Elizabeth Brown is a children’s book author, writer, film producer, and college teacher. She was born and raised in Illinois and Vermont, and she earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College as well as a Post-MFA Certificate in the Teaching of Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles. She is also a graduate of the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University.

Ms. Brown has taught Screenwriting, Playwriting, Documentary Film Writing, and Writing Books for Children to college and high school students, and has also given writing workshops.  Her children’s books, which have won numerous awards, are biographies:  stories of real people who many may not be familiar with, such as the painter Helen Frankenthaler and social reformer Jane Addams.

Her latest book, The World Entire: A True Story of an Extraordinary World War II Rescue, is about Aristides de Sousa Mendes–a Portuguese diplomat who saved the lives of thousands of refugees who were fleeing Nazi persecution through France during World War II.

This picture book was written for children from 8-12 years old with illustrations by Melissa Castrillon. At the end of the book there is an author’s note, which includes a more detailed biography and timeline, as well as quotes from the book and their sources, and a bibliography.  There is also an online educator’s guide.
